Elizabeth Cox Art Work

This blog is a record of my final university projects. It will act as an online scrap book/sketch book of my ideas, and an illustrated evaluation of the finished piece.

  • The anti-Library

This project was suggested to me by a tutor, it really relates to my work as it is looking at creating a collection of unread books. Its a really interesting piece and way of using the books people haven’t read. This really relates to my project because I have decided to use unread books, books from myself and friends that we have bought but never read.

  • Ice books.

For these I crushed ice in a blender, then took paperback books, slightly dampened the cover and spine and then pressed the crushed ice over the books. Wrapped tightly in a plastic bag (to hold the ice in place) and put them in the freezer. After a day or so the crushed ice had frozen solid to the books. This created a a sculptural look to the books, and showed they weren’t in use, however if somebody picks one up they can open the book, crack the ice on the spine and still read the book (the pages are not frozen or damaged). I really like this and I think I am going to continue with this method for my final piece.

  • Books in blocks of ice.

Inspired by this: http://www.ineedtostopsoon.com/category/projects/the-frozen-library/ I decided to freeze to books into blocks of ice. Whilst I think they look interesting they don’t really work for my project, because I want people who view the books to be able to choose whether to leave them frozen as sculptures or to pick them up and read them. With books in blocks of ice they would have to be left to defrost for a few hours before being anywhere near readable. So instead I am no going to look at just putting ice around the cover of books.

  • A hardback book that I soaked in water and then froze. Then I partially defrosted it and refroze it so that it got more of a frosty covering than just clear ice. I really like the way this looks, and I like the fact that I could at some point completely defrost it and see if it’s still readable.

  • A book I encased in air drying clay, I like the cracks so you can almost view the book trapped inside.

  • My first attempt at turning a book into an art piece, to show it has not been used or read for a while. For this book I brushed the pages with buttermilk, and then spread over a ground up mixture of moss and buttermilk, and placed it outside. The moss began to grow on the pages, and the pages began to change and decay. (The pic is taken after 4 days, after several weeks the moss died when a storm battered the book! the book is still outside and changing and decaying with things growing around and over it)

A great general book blog, and I particularly like this post because of the way the spines of the books have decayed and worn away, and been untouched for years.
